A few hours later, the florist’s wagon pulled up in front of the house. The driver emerged with a huge box and headed to the front door.

Johnny was first to answer. “May I help you?”

The man smiled. “I have a parcel for Miss Leticia Lang. Is this the right place?”

“Yes, sir, it is.”

“Johnny, what is this?” Letty came out the door with the scampering Rosebud at her feet.

“You are getting something! In a big, big box!”

Letty signed for the parcel and then took it in her arms. “Shall we go inside and see what it is?”

The blue ribbon took a few moments to untie. All the while Johnny jiggled from foot to foot in eagerness. Pulling off the lid, Letty glimpsed a mass of flowers through the tissue paper. A letter addressed to Miss Leticia Lili‘uokalani Lang in assertive masculine script lay at the top. Letty opened the letter carefully, hoping it was not another emotional shock of some kind. She already felt so empty.

Dear Letty,

I must return home early this morning, but I wanted you to have a token of my admiration for your bravery and skill. You are the best friend a horse could ever have. I hope I may count myself as your friend as well.

There are six leis here, one to honor each of the exceptional ponies you trained. Of course the red roses are for dear Apple.

Thank you for letting me be a part of their training. I am sorry that this “experiment” of yours had a sad ending. But please do not let that be all you remember. I know you are a warrior. You will, as they say, live to fight another day.

Respectfully yours,

Timothy Moran Rowley

p.s. I bought Percy from Willingham. How could I not have Lord Blakeney in my stables? His lei is the green orchid . . .

Letty pulled the tissue aside. As the smell of the flowers exploded out of the box, her tears began. Ginger, pīkake, sweet orchid and, of course, the roses. She slipped to the ground with great, gasping sobs.

“Mama, Mama, come quick! Flowers are making Letty cry!”

With a swish of skirts, Agnes came into the room, surrounding Letty with the warmth of her arms. “Cry, child, goodness knows you need it. I don’t know how you have made it so long without a good cry.” Agnes began to gently rock and croon as she held Letty tight.

“I miss my mother.”

“Of course you do.”

“So much is happening. I can’t figure it out. I don’t know who I am anymore.”

“Some people never know who they are. You will discover it, I know.”

“What if I don’t like what I discover?”

“Well then, change it.”

“I wish it were that simple. I wish the magic would just go away.”

Agnes stopped rocking and gave her a fierce hug. “Whatever you discover, in the end it will only be true if it embraces all of you. The gift is part of you now. I know you will find a way.”

Agnes planted a kiss on the back of Letty’s neck as she stood up.
